Yankee Stadium: A hitter’s paradise, even for little leaguers

The New York Yankees are finally considering moving the outfield fences back–Not because of the 82 homeruns hit in just the first 21 games played there, but because of the ones hit in game 22. Yankee Stadium hosted the first New York Little League Championship game early Thursday morning and the crowd in attendance got the surprise of their lives. The Stop & Shop Giants defeated Pablo’s Groceries 24-16 in a game that combined for 13 homeruns in 7 innings, all which were hit over the major league regulation fence.
The highlight of the game came when Giants’ third baseman Matthew Jones, 9, of Queens connected for his third homerun of the game, a 337 foot blast over the right field fence that gave the Giants a 16-14 lead. “It was really cool,” said Jones “I never thought I could hit the ball as far as A-Rod, but I guess anything is possible in this stadium.”
As the two teams made up of nine to eleven year olds proceeded to launch homerun after homerun over the fence, Yankees team president Randy Levine looked on in horror. “No wonder our team ERA is over 5.00,” he quipped. “If it’s this easy for ten year olds to do, imagine what it’s like to be a major-leaguer here.” Shortly after, Levine visited team owners Hank and Hal Steinbrenner to discuss the matter. All parties refused to comment afterward.
