Rhinestone Redux? Miley Cyrus remakes 80’s classic

Fox Films announced today that it plans to remake the 1984 Sylvester Stallone/Dolly Parton classic Rhinestone as a starring vehicle for Miley Cyrus.  The wonderful and beautifully made original found Stallone stretching his acting muscles as Nick Martenelli, a wise-cracking Italian cabdriver living in New York City.  When Parton’s country and western singer character, Jake, makes a wager with the slimy club owner that she can turn ANYONE into a country singer, hilarity ensues as she and Stallone cross paths and she attempts to turn him into the next Johnny Cash.   The original was known for the Tracy/Hepburn like banter between Stallone and Parton, as well as many memorable musical numbers from the pair.

“I’m excited to get the chance to remake such an incredible piece of film history,” Ms. Cyrus said after the studio announced the deal.  Fox originally had intentions of doing a straight sequel from a script by William Goldman entitled Rhinestone 2: Still Rhiney, but the project fell apart when the studio could not come to terms with the stars.

Vin Disel is in negotiations for the Stallone role.  Sam Mendes will direct from a script by Simon Beaufoy.  Fox plans a quick production schedule to release the film during Oscar season.
